Repentant kidnappers join hunters to combat crimes in Taraba
Gayya Alhaji Abdu (20) and Siyyo Alhaji Amadu (21), confessed kidnappers operating in Taraba State, have voluntarily surrendered themselves, expressing remorse for their past actions and a sincere desire to abandon their criminal activities.
Gayya recounted his descent into kidnapping, driven by fear upon discovering he was a suspect in criminal activities.
Seeking refuge with a friend already involved in a kidnapping gang around the Jalingo, Kona, and Lankabiri mountains, he witnessed harrowing mistreatment of victims, which became a catalyst for his decision to repent.
Similarly, Amadu admitted to joining a kidnapping gang in the Mayo-Renewo area of Ardo-Kola council, participating in several abduction incidents before realizing the severity of his actions and choosing to change his ways.
Babangida Kwamando, leader of the local hunters’ association, extended a warm welcome to the repentant individuals, affirming the association’s commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
He explained that repentant criminals undergo a solemn oath on the Holy Qur’an, pledging to refrain from illegal activities before being accepted into the hunters’ association.
Kwamando emphasized the significance of Gayya and Amadu’s decision to abandon their criminal past and join the fight against banditry and kidnapping, noting that it sends a message of hope to communities grappling with insecurity in the State.
