Olympic 2024: Favour Ofili Condemns AFN, NOC for Incompetence Leading to Her 100m Disqualification
Favour Ofili has harshly criticized the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for their incompetence and lack of transparency, resulting in her disqualification from the women’s 100 meters at the Paris Olympics due to their failure to register her for the event.
The 22-year-old sprinter and Louisiana State University (LSU) student shared the disappointing news on her X handle on Tuesday, revealing that despite qualifying for the Olympics by winning the national title in April, she will not be competing.
“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter my name. I have worked for four years to earn this opportunity,” Ofili wrote. “For what? To not be entered and compete at the Olympic Games because the responsible organization failed to enter me?”
Ofili accused the NOC and AFN of “taking this opportunity from me,” adding that “neither organization can ever be trusted in the future.”
She also qualified for the women’s 200-meter race and expressed hope that the same omission does not occur for that event.
This incident highlights the ongoing issues within Nigeria’s athletic administration, impacting athletes’ careers and the country’s representation at international competitions.
