Gareth Southgate Resigned from His Position as England National Team Manager

Two days following his team’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Gareth Southgate announced his resignation as England manager.

After eight years in command of the Three Lions, the 53-year-old is leaving after guiding the group through four major championships.

He said, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” in a poignant statement.

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role,” he added.

Southgate’s resignation marks the end of a significant era for England’s national team. Appointed in 2016, he guided England to notable achievements, including a semi-final appearance in the 2018 World Cup and a runner-up finish in the 2020 European Championship.

With the UEFA Nations League campaign set to begin against the Republic of Ireland on September 7, the Football Association (FA) will start the search for a new manager.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham stated that the aim is to appoint a new manager as soon as possible, with an interim boss ready to step in if needed.
